VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES (as of January 2012)
AS A MAN/WOMAN THINKETH… (projects for those with a creative spirit)
____ Art Exchange: Expose students in Brooklyn schools to famous African/ African-American artists and creative hands-on activities on a monthly basis. A nine month commitment is requested. Training is provided.
____ Blanket Knitting/Crocheting: Knit or crochet blankets for patients in nursing homes or family members as they support their loved ones. Ongoing service opportunity.
____ St. Paul Artisans: Have you noticed how our building is transformed during the holidays or for a dramatic presentation? Much of that amazing work is done by the hands of a very dedicated team of volunteers called the St. Paul Artisans. If you’ve ever thought “Hey, I can do that!” or, “I’d love to learn to do that!” The Artisans need & welcome you!
FUN FOR EVENT PLANNING GURUS! (big projects, big bang, big FUN!)
____ SOUPER Bowl Sunday (Canned Food Drive for Food Bank): Volunteers needed to assist with the collection, move to storage area. Food drive is culminates on NFL Super Bowl Sunday, February 5, 2012.
____ Community Care Day: Monthly upkeep of neighborhood grounds and school buildings. Events held on Saturdays. The whole family is invited to work. Young people must be accompanied by an adult.
____ Sister Soldier Project: Solicit donations (financial or in kind), recruiting volunteers and organize packing event. Donations needed: African American specific hair care products (combs, relaxers, pins, oil, shampoo, conditioner, etc..) for our Jewels (Black women) serving in the military overseas (sistersoldierproject.com).
____ Golf Tournament Fundraiser: Volunteers will help organize and oversee fine all details of an annual golf tournament (secure location, scheduling, soliciting donations, marketing, day of the event, etc..) Event proceeds will support a pastoral project to be announced.
I NEED YOU TO SURVIVE! (opportunities assisting persons in need directly)
____ Caring Representative: Volunteer is responsible for recruiting classroom families to help out a fellow classmate who has experienced a life-changing event such as a new birth, illness, or death in the family. Tasks may include scheduling meals, delivery and/or carpooling. Training required with the SPCBC Congregational Care Ministry.
____ Caring Preparation Representative: Provide meals and other assistance to school families who have experienced a birth, death, or serious illness in the family. Training required with the SPCBC Congregational Care Ministry.
____ Senior Living Visitor: Spend some time with a senior citizen sharing stories/experiences, watching TV, enjoying a snack, taking a walk or just sitting in silence. Your presence is what will be most appreciated.
____ Fresh Start, New Beginnings Linen Drive: Organize donation drive & delivery of new linens to transitional housing locations.
IT TAKES A VILLAGE (opportunities working with youth)
____ Father/Daughter Dance: Organize, coordinate, set-up and clean-up.

____ Graduation Reception: Organize, coordinate, set- up/clean up and serve refreshments.
____ Mother/Son Game Night: Volunteers needed to help organize, coordinate, set-up and clean-up.
____ 2nd Pair of Hands (Room Parent): One volunteer is needed per classroom to assist with special classroom events, helping the teacher with any additional classroom activities or special events that happen throughout the year.
____ School Supplies Distribution: Volunteers needed to help distribute supply orders to the classroom. This task is completed a few days before the beginning of the new school year.
____ Athletics: Organize, direct, and teach as a coach or assistant coach within Brooklyn schools or local athletic sports leagues.
COOKING/FOOD
____ Grandparents Day: Volunteers needed to coordinate, organize, bake cookies and muffins for morning receptions after each worship service on Grandparents Day. In addition, help is needed to set-up and clean-up. (event is in September)
____ Baking: Bake treats for special events and deliver them to the St Paul Community Baptist Church Central Office or designated locations within the East New York Community on specified dates.
____ Turkey Drive for Food Bank: Volunteers needed to assist with planning and organizing, coordination and collection of frozen turkeys. Date to be announced but is usually a few days before the Thanksgiving.
____ Breakfast with Santa: Holiday breakfast with crafts and a visit from Santa. Volunteers needed to help coordinate, set up for the event, prepare breakfast and clean-up after the event. Date to be announced; potentially the first Saturday in December.
ADMINISTRATIVE (opportunities available periodically)
____ Mailings: Assist with stuffing, labeling, and sorting school mailings.
____ Office work: Volunteers needed to help with clerical work, filing, mailings, and organizing pew envelopes.
