History

In 1980, while St. Paul Community was under the leadership of Pastor Emeritus Rev. Dr. Johnny Ray Youngblood, God navigated the steps of a Brooklyn mother, her deaf teenage daughter and an interpreter from Virginia named Lydia Scott to St. Paul Community Baptist Church. None of them knew that they would be the pioneers responsible for the genesis of two separate yet synergistic ministries, The Ministry for the Deaf and the Interpreters’ Ministry, that would lead people to Christ.

Interpreters’ Ministry

As Aaron stood in the gap between God, his manservant Moses and the people of Israel (Exodus 4:10 – 17), SPCBC’s team of committed men and women also stand daily in the gap between God, the pastor and the Deaf community. Providing interpreting services now for more than 28 years, this team consists of certified and pre-certified interpreters, sign language students, volunteers and two full time staff interpreters, making SPCBC one of the largest predominately hearing religious institutions totally accessible to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community.

Deaf Ministry

John 3:16,  for God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him ( Hearing, Deaf & Hard of Hearing ) should not perish but have everlasting life.

The Deaf and Hard of Hearing are able to study the Word of God, serve and take on leadership roles as Christ has ordained. We give thanks to God for our Pastor Emeritus Rev. Dr. Johnny Ray Youngblood, a man after God’s own heart who led all of God’s people with love and integrity. We thank you for daring to tread where others would not. Because of you, the Deaf have received the precious gift of Salvation.

Now under the leadership of our Senior Pastor, Rev. David Keith Brawley and his inherited team of highly qualified interpreters and leaders, both Deaf and hearing, we continue to press forward, making ourselves available to disciple to those who God sends. Get ready, for God is about to do a new thing! (Isaiah 48: 6)
